More than 25 years of working with young children and their parents, I'm appalled by the attitude of parents, teachers and as a result students, towards subject selection after class X .
Talking of students , many are absolutely sure what career they want to pursue in future. Their choices may be a result of self exploration and self realisation, the probability of which is low, but most often the feedback received from parents, teachers and/or peers.
There is a second category of students who are clear that studying science is beyond them and history & political science is boring , so they are going to study 'commerce'. A very lame excuse, but nonetheless.
The third category of students who are academically bright, high scorers throughout, who according to the adults are 'cut to make a kill' at the competitive game of musical chairs, called the entrance exams for the coveted institutions. But to the horror of all the authorities they refuse to tow in line . They come up with ideas which are not palatable to the ambitious and stereotypical authority figures. And for me , as a school/ career/ life skills counselor , this is the most challenging group. Challenging because these kiddos , according to the objectives of education have developed the most basic and important skills - independent thinking, decision making and problem solving. But I believe that this purpose of education has long been forgotten. Today we are hell-bent of producing high functioning zombies who will fall in categories as prescribed by the system and follow the grind. Anyone who dares to question or detract, is welcome to face the music.
I'm yet to uncode society's obsession with science subjects as taught in school and grades/ marks/ percentiles . How does

, not studying science or Mathematics make a person 'undivine', and a career besides medicine and engineering outrageously blasphemous.
I wonder what would a society be if there were only engineers and doctors ( not to say that we don't need them), but imagine if there were no painters, musicians, artists, accountants, lawyers, social workers, writers, actors, chefs, pilots. Who would build and design our homes, who would fly our planes, manage our financial matters, take care of our 101 needs and desires -that we have in the course of a lifetime?
I believe that more than a degree/ tag , we need more thinking individuals, who are equipped to carry out their responsibilities effectively and innovate to create more value to the society. We need our children to be able to wade through life challenges with courage and confidence to create opportunities out of adversities.
